The World Health Organization recognizes 15 unique and distinct heat related illnesses that result from hyperthermia as listed in their International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The most common are heatstroke, heat syncope, heat cramps, and unspecified heat exhaustion. Heatstroke is the most severe and occurs when the body is unable to regulate internal temperature due to failures in the cooling mechanisms. Body temperature may rise to 106 F within 10-15 minutes of onset which can easily lead to neural damage or death if not treated immediately.
More people in the United States died from hyperthermia from 1979-2003 than hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, floods, and earthquakes combined. In August 2003, a record heat wave swept through Western Europe killing 35,000 people over 8 countries. At the Chicago marathon in October 2007, a healthy 35 year old cop died from heat stroke and over 300 healthy participants had to be treated by medical personnel for heat illnesses. In 2006, heat related deaths spiked in high school football players. Heat related illness is the third leading cause of death in youth athletics. Over the next 40 years, heat related deaths are expected to increase by an estimated 47-95 percent in some areas such as metropolitan New York due to climate changes.
Our product is a lightweight heat extraction device that is worn like a cooling head band. By targeting the forehead, it is possible to draw large amounts of heat from the body. It is clinically shown effective to prevent body temperature from rising and can prevent heat related illnesses and death. It can be built in to helmets and hats so the user will not be burdened with an awkward device.
